Overview
The
all-new 2020 Mercedes-AMG CLA-class delivers high-performance thrills
in a compact and luxurious package. Both of these four-door coupes are
souped-up versions of the milder Mercedes-Benz CLA-class—also
all new for 2020. The AMG-tuned CLA35 and CLA45 pack more power, more
presence, and more features than those less-exciting interpretations.
Engine, Ride, and Handling
While both models boast the company's latest turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder,
the CLA35 makes 302 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque and the CLA45
develops 382 ponies and 354 lb-ft. The CLA35 uses a seven-speed
automatic transmission while the CLA45 has an eight-speed automatic.
They both have standard 4Matic+ all-wheel drive, which can send all of
their power to the rear wheels. The 45 also can be equipped with a
tail-sliding Drift drive mode. A set of optional adaptive dampers
provide adjustable ride quality. While we haven't driven either of these
AMG variants, we've gleaned some first impressions from driving the 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA250.
That model felt more athletic and sophisticated than the one it
replaces, but we fully expect its AMG siblings to be even sharper on the
road.
Interior and Technology
The
2020 CLA45 stands out on the street from the 2020 CLA35 with a flashier
grille, wider front fenders, extra aerodynamic bits, and more. However,
the two have more similar aesthetics on the inside. Both can be
outfitted with black faux-suede accents as well as red seatbelts and
contrast-stitching. They also have standard ambient interior lighting
that can be customized and is illuminated in the circular air vents.
Their dashboards sport a dazzling display that houses the instrument
panel and infotainment system. The latter has Mercedes' MBUX system that
is operated by a touchscreen or touchpad. A voice-activated assistant
is available, too, but other versions we've tested have had some
annoying quirks.
