Overview
The
2020 Mercedes-AMG A35 sedan is the first of AMG's new entry-level
models, and it eventually will be followed by the more powerful A45.
Based on the new A-class, the A35 sedan goes after established all-wheel-drive contenders such as the Volkswagen Golf R and the Audi S3.
More aggressive front and rear bumpers distinguish the AMG-branded
A-class from its plebian sibling, as will the raspy note from its dual
exhaust tips. While pricing hasn't been announced, we expect the A35
will start at around $45,000.
Engines, Ride, and Handling
Basically identical to the A35 hatchback,
the 2020 A35 sedan uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder good for
302 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. The engine pairs with a
seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and standard all-wheel
drive with a variable torque split of up to 50/50 front-to-rear.
Mercedes says that the A35 will hit 60 mph in 4.7 seconds with the
standard launch control. There are five driving modes (Slippery,
Comfort, Sport, Sport+, and Individual) paired with the AMG Dynamics
stability-control system, larger brakes, retuned steering, and a
different suspension setup with available adaptive dampers. We estimate
that the A45 will get more than 415 horsepower in its top trim and an
all-wheel-drive system with a rear-drive Drift mode.
Interior and Technology
Separating itself from the regular A-class, the AMG models
come with different bucket seats, unique interior trim finishes such as
red seatbelts, and a Supersport display mode for the standard dual MBUX
infotainment screens. Optional features include a steering wheel with
touchscreen buttons for driving-mode selection and a Track Pace
telemetry app that uses the A-class's augmented-reality navigation
system to project the ideal driving line when on a racetrack.
